Duties, Taxes & VAT

Last updated: July 20, 2026

This page explains how sales tax, customs duties, value-added tax, import taxes, brokerage fees, and other charges may apply to purchases from Sylvie Silk.

Sylvie Silk is operated by EVELYN SYLVIE Inc., doing business as SYLVIE SILK, located at 627 Locust Street, Roselle, New Jersey 07203, United States.

  1. Prices Displayed on Our Website

Unless otherwise stated, prices displayed on sylviesilk.com are shown in United States dollars.

The displayed product price does not necessarily include sales tax, customs duties, import taxes, value-added tax, brokerage fees, customs-clearance charges, or other governmental or carrier-imposed charges applicable to the customer’s order or delivery destination.

Any taxes or charges collected directly by Sylvie Silk will be identified during checkout before the customer submits the order.

  1. United States Orders

For orders delivered within the United States, applicable state and local sales tax may be calculated and collected during checkout based on the delivery address and applicable law.

The amount of sales tax shown during checkout may change if the customer changes the shipping address, delivery method, or contents of the order.

  1. International Orders

Orders shipped outside the United States may be subject to charges imposed by the destination country or territory, including:

  • customs duties;
  • import VAT, GST, or other consumption taxes;
  • customs-processing charges;
  • brokerage or customs-clearance fees;
  • carrier disbursement or advancement fees;
  • storage or handling charges; and
  • other governmental or administrative charges.

The amount of these charges may depend on factors such as the destination, product classification, country of origin, declared value, shipping cost, insurance, and local customs regulations.

Sylvie Silk does not control charges independently imposed by customs authorities, tax authorities, postal operators, financial institutions, or international carriers.

Charges Collected at Checkout

When Sylvie Silk collects duties, taxes, VAT, or other import charges in advance, those charges will be identified in the order summary before the customer submits the order.

The checkout page may state that an order is shipped with duties and taxes included or paid in advance. In that situation, the customer ordinarily should not be asked to pay the same estimated charges again upon delivery.

A customs or tax authority may nevertheless reassess an import, request additional documentation, or impose an adjustment according to the laws of the destination country.

Charges Payable Upon Import or Delivery

Unless the checkout page expressly states that duties and taxes are included or collected in advance, they are not included in the product price or shipping charge.

The customer or recipient may be required to pay applicable duties, import taxes, VAT, brokerage fees, and customs-clearance charges directly to the carrier, postal operator, customs authority, or tax authority before delivery can be completed.

Where applicable, the recipient may be treated as the importer of record and may be responsible for satisfying the destination country’s import requirements.

  1. European Union Orders

Sylvie Silk does not currently accept orders for delivery to the European Union.

Before EU sales are enabled, Sylvie Silk will establish the necessary VAT, customs, consumer-protection, product-compliance, shipping, and import procedures.

This page and the checkout process will then be updated to explain whether applicable VAT, customs duties, and related charges are:

  • included in the displayed price;
  • calculated and collected during checkout; or
  • payable by the customer or recipient upon import.

Goods imported into the European Union are generally subject to VAT, and the EU’s Import One Stop Shop may be used to simplify VAT collection for qualifying distance-sale consignments not exceeding €150.

  1. Other International Destinations

Availability for delivery to the United Kingdom and other international destinations will depend on Sylvie Silk’s shipping, tax-registration, customs, and product-compliance arrangements.

Where checkout is not available for a particular destination, an order cannot be completed for delivery to that location.

Before sales are activated for a destination, Sylvie Silk will determine how applicable taxes and import charges will be handled and will update the checkout information when necessary.

  1. Customs Valuation and Product Descriptions

Sylvie Silk will prepare customs documentation using accurate product descriptions, quantities, values, countries of origin, and tariff information based on the goods being shipped.

Sylvie Silk cannot:

  • declare an order at an artificially reduced value;
  • identify a commercial purchase as a gift;
  • provide an inaccurate country of origin;
  • alter the description of merchandise to avoid duties or restrictions; or
  • submit false or misleading customs information.

A discount properly applied to an order may be reflected in customs or commercial documentation where permitted.

  1. Brokerage and Carrier Fees

A shipping carrier or postal operator may charge brokerage, customs-clearance, handling, storage, disbursement, advancement, or administrative fees in addition to duties and taxes imposed by the destination government.

These carrier charges are determined independently by the carrier and may not be included in the amount collected by Sylvie Silk unless expressly stated during checkout.

Customers should contact the carrier directly regarding a carrier-imposed charge.

  1. Refused, Unclaimed, or Unpaid Shipments

Failure to pay applicable import charges may cause an order to be delayed, refused, returned, held, or abandoned by the carrier or customs authority.

When a shipment is returned to Sylvie Silk because the customer or recipient:

  • refused delivery;
  • failed to claim the package;
  • provided an incomplete or incorrect address; or
  • declined to pay applicable import charges,

any refund will be determined after the returned merchandise is received and inspected.

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the refund may be reduced by amounts Sylvie Silk is required to pay as a result of the refused or unclaimed shipment, including:

  • return transportation costs;
  • customs duties or taxes charged to Sylvie Silk;
  • brokerage or customs-clearance fees;
  • carrier handling or storage charges; and
  • other nonrecoverable expenses resulting from the return.

This section does not limit any nonwaivable consumer rights or rights relating to damaged, defective, incorrect, or nonconforming merchandise.

  1. Returns and Refunds of Duties or Taxes

Sylvie Silk can refund only duties, taxes, VAT, or similar charges that:

  1. were collected directly by Sylvie Silk; and
  2. are refundable under applicable law and the terms governing the return.

When customs duties, import VAT, taxes, brokerage fees, or carrier charges were paid directly by the customer to a customs authority, tax authority, postal operator, or carrier, the customer may need to request reimbursement directly from that organization.

Eligibility for reimbursement is determined by the applicable authority or carrier. Certain customs charges, brokerage fees, processing fees, and administrative charges may be nonrefundable.

  1. Currency Conversion and Financial-Institution Charges

The customer’s bank, card issuer, or payment provider may convert the order total into another currency.

Exchange rates, currency-conversion charges, and foreign-transaction fees are determined by the customer’s financial institution or payment provider and are not controlled by Sylvie Silk.

The amount shown on the customer’s bank or card statement may therefore differ from the amount displayed in United States dollars on the Sylvie Silk order confirmation.

  1. Changes in Tax and Customs Requirements

Tax, VAT, customs, and import requirements may change.

Sylvie Silk may update this page, its checkout process, or its international shipping practices to reflect changes in law, governmental requirements, carrier procedures, available delivery destinations, or business operations.

The version of this page in effect when an order is placed will apply to that order, subject to mandatory applicable law.
