Silk Charmeuse

Silk charmeuse is a smooth, fluid 100% silk fabric distinguished by its lustrous face, soft-matte reverse, and elegant drape. Sylvie Silk offers silk charmeuse in 16, 19, 22, 25, and 30 momme across 88 Color Series 600 shades for apparel, accessories, bridal projects, bedding, and other creations where softness, movement, and luminosity matter.

The Signature Luster of Silk

Silk charmeuse is woven with a satin structure that places more warp yarns across the surface of the fabric. This creates its characteristic luminous face, fluid drape, and smooth hand, while the reverse remains softly textured and matte.

Working With Silk Charmeuse

Silk charmeuse has a smooth, slippery surface and fluid drape, so careful handling during cutting and sewing helps maintain accuracy. Pattern weights, a rotary cutter or sharp fabric shears, a fine needle, and test stitching on a sample are useful when working with charmeuse.

Because the lustrous face can show needle marks, puckering, and handling more readily than some matte silk fabrics, avoid unnecessary pinning in visible areas and test stitch length, tension, and pressing temperature before sewing the finished piece.

Finish raw edges with a seam treatment appropriate to the garment, such as French seams, narrow hems, or another lightweight finish. When cutting, note the fabric’s direction and sheen so adjoining pieces are oriented consistently.

Caring for Silk Charmeuse

  • Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild detergent formulated for silk when appropriate.
  • Test a sample first, particularly with deeply colored fabrics.
  • Avoid prolonged soaking.
  • Do not rub, twist, or wring.
  • Blot excess water gently with a clean towel.
  • Dry flat or hang carefully away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Press from the reverse side using a low silk setting, preferably with a pressing cloth.

Finished, structured, lined, embellished, or particularly valuable pieces may be better suited to professional cleaning.
